BACKGROUND NOTES

Below are extracts from the lyrics of some of the songs, and some background notes:

Good morning Baltimore (extract)
[original London stage version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzWZrM5lqoQ]

Oh oh oh, woke up today
Feeling the way I always do
Oh oh oh, hungry for something
That I can't eat, then I hear that beat
That rhythm of town starts calling me down
It's like a message from high above
Oh oh oh, Pulling me out
To the smiles and the streets that I love

Good morning Baltimore
Every day's like an open door
Every night is a fantasy
Every sound's like a symphony

Good morning Baltimore
Baltimore is the largest city in the state of Maryland, on the eastern coast of the United States. John Waters, who wrote and directed the film on which the musical is based, was born in Baltimore.

Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now (extract)
[original Broadway cast recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFjxcUVUNlQ]

Stop! Don't! No! Please!
Stop! Don't! No! Please!
Stop! Don't! No! Please!
Mama, I'm a big girl now
(Hey mama, say mama)
Once upon a time, I was a shy young thing
Could barely walk and talk, so much as dance and sing
But let me take that stage, I want to take my bow
'Cause Mama, I'm a big girl now

If I get a hickey, please don't have a cow
A hickey is a US expression for a lovebite; "to have a cow" is a US expression which means to worry about something too much - it is similar to the British expression "to have kittens"

But now I'm just like Gidget and I've got to get to Rome!
"Gidget Goes To Rome" was a 1963 film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057100

So say arrivederci, toodle-oo and ciao!
These are all expressions meaning "goodbye"

Once upon a time I used to dress up Ken
The Barbie Doll was launched in America in 1959, and the doll representing her 'boyfriend' Ken first appeared in 1961. Young girls enjoyed dressing up the dolls in a variety of costumes.

Miss Baltimore Crabs (extract)
[2007 film version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCW-iFgUbKY]

You're too wide from the back
Honey, look at her front!
Wait, are we on "Candid Camera"?
OK, where is Allen Funt?

Wait, are we on "Candid Camera"? OK, where is Allen Funt?
Allen Funt created and hosted a popular American TV series called Candid Camera, in which practical jokes were played on people who were being filmed secretly.

I Can Hear the Bells (extract)
[2007 film version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2MJTYxAakI]

I can hear the bells
My ears are ringing
I can hear the bells
The bridesmaids are singing
Everybody says
That a guy who's such a gem
Won't look my way
Well, the laugh's on them
'Cause I can hear the bells

It Takes Two (extract)
[original Broadway cast recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-JVRH2pQho]

Lancelot had Guinevere
Mrs Claus has old St Nick
Romeo had Juliet
And Liz, well, she has her Dick

They say it takes two to tango
Well, that tango's child's play
So take me to the dancefloor
And we'll twist the night away

Just like Frankie Avalon
Had his favourite Mouseketeer
I dream of a lover, babe,
To say the things I long to hear
So come closer baby
Oh, and whisper in my ear

Lancelot had Guinevere
According to British legend, Guinevere was the wife of King Arthur, and is said to have had a love affair with Arthur's chief knight Sir Lancelot

Mrs Claus has old St Nick
Saint Nicholas (Nick is an abbreviation for Nicholas) and Santa Claus are both alternative names for Father Christmas, so "Mrs Claus" refers to his wife

Romeo had Juliet
Romeo and Juliet were lovers in one of William Shakespeare's best-known plays

And Liz, well, she has her Dick
The actress Elizabeth ("Liz") Taylor married Richard ("Dick") Burton in the 1960's

Just like Frankie Avalon had his favourite Mouseketeer
Frankie Avalon was a young American singer who became a teen idol in the '50s. In the 1960s he starred in a series of "Beach Party" films. His partner in these films was Annette Funicello, who had been a "Mouseketeer" (one of the children who performed in the TV show The Mickey Mouse Club). Welcome to the 60's (extract)
[original London stage version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmKQAljaack]

Hey Tracy, hey baby, look at me!
I'm the cutest chickie that you ever did see
Hey Tracy, hey baby, look at us!
Where is there a team that's half as fabulous?

I let go, go, go of the past now
Said hello to this red carpet ride
Yes I know that the world's spinning fast now
Tell Lollobrigida to step aside!
Your mama's welcoming the 60's
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh your mama's welcoming the 60's
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Go mama, go go go!
Welcome to the 60's

Tell Lollobrigida to step aside!
Gina Lollobrigida was a very popular Italian actress and sex symbol of the 1950s and '60s, starring in many Hollywood films.

(You're) Timeless To Me (extract)
[Broadway stage version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg9y823YJIk]

Fads keep a-fadin'
Castro's invading
But, Wilbur, you're timeless to me
Hairdos are higher
Mine feels like barbed wire
But you say I'm chic as can be

You're like a rare vintage ripple
A vintage they'll never forget
So pour me a teeny weenie triple
And we can toast the fact
We ain't dead yet!

I can't stop eating
Your hairline's receding
And soon you'll have nothing at all
So you'll wear a wig
While I roast a pig

Hey, pass the Geritol
Glenn Miller had brass
That Chubby Checker's a gas
But they all pass eventually
You'll never be passé
Hip hooray!
You're timeless to me

Castro's invading
A reference to the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961, when a US-backed force of Cuban exiles attempted unsuccessfully to overthrow the Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

Hey, pass the Geritol
Geritol is a US brand of tonic, including iron and vitamins.

Glenn Miller had brass
Glenn Miller was an American musician and leader of a big brass band

That Chubby Checker's a gas
Chubby Checker was an American singer-songwriter whose best-known hit was "The Twist" in 1960

Without Love (extract)
[2007 film version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNZ0gAvgHL0]

Without love
Life is like my dad without his bromo
Without love
Life's just making out to Perry Como
...
Without love
Life is like a beat that you can't follow
Without love
Life is Doris Day at the Apollo
...
Without love
Life's a 45 when you can't buy it
Without love
Life is like my mother on a diet

Without love ... life's just making out to Perry Como
Perry Como was a popular Italian-American singer

Without love ... life is Doris Day at the Apollo
The Apollo is a music hall in New York City's Harlem area which was associated with black African-American performers; Doris Day was a white actress who would have looked out of place if she performed there

Without love ... life's a '45' when you can't buy it
A'45' is a single: a record with one song on each side, played at a speed of 45 revolutions per minute

Cooties (extract)
[original Broadway cast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANgO8DXIpwo]

She's got cooties
They've found a place to nest
She's got cooties
If I were her I'd be depressed
Long tailed, sharp nailed
Fuzzy legs, laying eggs

Cooties is a term used by children in North America to mean an imaginary unpleasant disease which can be passed from one child to another in the playground. Children sometimes "immunise" each other by giving a "cootie shot": the child recites the rhyme "circle, circle, dot, dot, now you've got the cootie shot" and uses an index finger to trace the circles and dots on another child's arm.

You Can't Stop the Beat (extract)
[original London stage version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJjQCmBgJ1U]

You can't stop an avalanche as it races down the hill
You can try to stop the seasons, girl, but you know you never will
And you can try to stop my dancing feet, but I just cannot stand still
'Cause the world keeps spinning around and around
And my heart's keeping time to the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums, then I found my way

'Cause you can't stop the beat, ever since this old world began
A woman found that if she shook it she could shake up a man
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it the best that I can ... today
'Cause you can't stop the motion of the ocean or the sun in the sky
You can wonder if you want to, but I never ask why
And if you try to hold me down I'm gonna spit in your eye and say
That you can't stop the beat!
