On Saturday 14 January 2006 I went to see the Russian Winter Festival in Trafalgar Square, London. This was the second time that this event has been held. There were a wide range of performances of music and dance throughout the day, starting with folk music/dance and ending with rock in the evening. There is a lot of variety, reflecting the range of cultures and traditions across the huge area of the Russian Federation. No money is spared on this event - it cost over a million pounds, funded by Russian companies, but is free to watch. They even flew over members of the Kremlin Guard (the Russian equivalent of the Queen's Household Guard) for their first display abroad. The event is a celebration of the Russian "Old New Year", which is the date on which the New Year used to be celebrated before the Russian Revolution. You haven't missed all of the New Year events yet - there is another big (free) event in Trafalgar Square / Leicester Square / Chinatown on Sunday 29 January to celebrate the Chinese New Year (the year of the dog). For details of this, see:
