With the Christmas holidays nearly upon us, thousands of students will be looking for temporary work to help with their finances. One choice now being taken by hundreds of students is to enrol on http://www.studentgems.com - a new website that offers to match student skills against the demand for one-off jobs from businesses and individuals.

Jobs currently being undertaken by students via the website include making a caricature for a birthday cake, wedding photographs, upgrading a website, sign language lessons and even re-stringing pearls.

"The need for a website like ours has never been more clear," says Joanna Ward, co-founder of the studentgems website. "The interest rate charged on student loans has just doubled from 2.4% to 4.8% a year. The higher interest rates means graduates will have to find an additional 465 a year to cover the increase. Christmas is an ideal time to make use of the site."

She points out that graduates leaving college this year will need to be on a starting salary of at least 23,200 before their loan re-payments will actually begin to reduce the capital on a 15,000 student loan.

A recent survey by The Royal Bank of Scotland found that three out of five students are already undertaking part-time jobs during the university term to help reduce their term-time living costs.

The Studentgems website allows students - anyone in full time education - to post their profiles on the site and list all their skills - anything from language translations, website design, computer set-up, sports lessons and up to 1,400 other skills to choose from. The more skills they post, the better their chances of finding work.

The website gives students a chance to utilise skills which they may not otherwise have an opportunity to use and thanks to the wonders of technology, location may no longer be an issue.

Students in Scotland can work for clients in Cornwall. Details are exchanged and often this is all that is needed. A student in Reading recently carried out a job for a customer in London and the pair never met.

Joanna Ward and Studentgems co-founder Sue Harrison have been amazed by the response from students to their new website http://www.studentgems.com. Over 500 signed on to the site in search of work in the first month.

Studentgems.com is the first company to develop a national jobs and skills market tailored to student skills. As well as earning extra cash, students can get valuable work experience which could even be a stepping stone to a career after college.
