Donnie Darko (CD album)
Artist: Michael Andrews
Label: Sanctuary
Date: 19 January, 2004

The voice on this record is that of the American singer Gary Jules - the style of singing is similar to that of Michael Stipe of REM. The song "Mad World" was originally a hit in 1983 for the British group Tears for Fears. This version is much slower and more emotional than the original, and was used in the scenes at the end of an American independent film called "Donnie Darko". Mad World was the Christmas Number 1 in the UK in 2003, narrowly outselling "Christmas Time (don't let the bells end)" by the British band The Darkness.

The song expresses the feelings of someone who is feeling depressed. He doesn't want people to see him ("hide my head") and wants to drink alcohol to help him forget his problems ("want to drown my sorrow"). He can't see a happy future for himself ("no tomorrow") and even thinks about wanting to die ("the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had"). He sees the people around him busily following their routines ("bright and early for the daily races"), but feels that what they are doing is pointless ("people run in circles", "going nowhere") and that noone seems happy ("worn out faces", "no expression", "tears are filling up their glasses"). The singer feels it is a "mad world" ...

Mad World
Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules

All around me are familiar faces
Worn-out places, worn-out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
Find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
Find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad world
Mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No-one knew me, no-one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny
Find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
Find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad world
Mad world
Enlarge your world
Mad world

CHANGES

Number 1 on: 14 December 2003

Type of song:

Changes (CD single)
Artist: Kelly & Ozzy Osbourne
Label: Sanctuary
Date: 8 December, 2003

Changes (CD album)
Artist: Kelly Osbourne
Label: Sanctuary
Date: 3 November, 2003

Ozzy Osbourne became famous as the lead singer of the group Black Sabbath in the early 1970's. A television documentary series based on his home life with his family has been very successful and has increased his popularity. He sings this song together with his daughter, Kelly. It is his first number 1 single in the UK.

The song is about a daughter who has grown up and has left home, and her father's feelings about this. Both father and daughter know that they have to accept the changes that are happening in their lives, but they both feel sad. The father still wants to protect his daughter ("you know the world is an evil place"), but the daughter needs her independence ("I found my way").

Changes
Kelly Osbourne & Ozzy Osbourne

[Kelly]
I feel unhappy
I am so sad
I've lost the best friend
That I ever had

[Ozzy]
She is my baby
I love her so
But it's too late now
I've let her go

We're going through changes
We're going through changes

[Kelly]
We shared the years
We shared each day
I love you, daddy
But I've found my way

[Ozzy]
You know the world
Is an evil place
My baby's grown now
She's found her way

We're going through changes
We're going through changes

[Kelly]
It took so long
To realise
And I can still hear
His last goodbyes

[Ozzy]
Now all my days
I've filled with fears
Wish I could go back
And change the years

We're going through changes
We're going through changes
We're going through ... changes

LEAVE RIGHT NOW

Number 1 on: 30 November 2003, 7 December 2003

Type of song:

Leave Right Now
Artist: Will Young
Label: Rca
Date: 24 November, 2003
Friday's Child (CD album)
Artist: Will Young
Label: Bmg
Date: 1 December, 2003

Will Young won a television competition called Pop Idol in February 2002. His first single, Evergreen, went straight to number one, and was followed by several other successful singles. To see pictures of Will turning on the Christmas Lights at Regent Street, London in November 2002, see: Ideas/Album/ChristmasLights. After this, he took a year off without releasing any singles. This is the first single from his second album, "Friday's Child" (see above).

Will Young's official website is: http://www.wyoung.co.uk. You can listen to the first 2 minutes of the song if you select "Music" then click on "Singles" and click on "audio high" under the "Leave Right Now" single cover).

The singer used to go out with a girl, but she left him. He was broken-hearted, but was starting to get over her. Now she has asked to meet him again, and although he had promised himself he wouldn't see her again, he agreed. Now she is in his arms, and he is starting to fall in love with her again ("now I tremble in your arms"). But although he wants to be together with her, and maybe even marry (I'd love to say, "I do"), he is scared the relationship would end again and he would feel even more depressed ("my racing heart is just the same - why make it strong [just] to break it once again?" and "you're opening up a healing wound again"). "Once bitten, twice [as] shy" is said when you are frightened to do something again because you had an unpleasant experience doing it the first time. So he thinks it is best to "leave right now, before I fall any deeper [in love]". But you know that he is not sure and finds this a hard decision to make, which is why he says "I think I'd better leave right now" and not just "I'll leave right now".

Leave Right Now
Will Young

I'm here, just like I said
Though it's breaking every rule I've ever made
My racing heart is just the same
Why make it strong to break it once again?
And I'd love to say, "I do"
Give everything to you
But I can never now be true
So I say:

"I think I'd better leave right now
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
Feeling weaker and weaker
Somebody better show me out
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now"

I'm here, so please explain
Why you're opening up a healing wound again
I'm a little more careful
Perhaps it shows
But if I lose the highs
At least I'm spared the lows

Now I tremble in your arms
What could be the harm
To feel my spirit calm
So I say:

"I think I'd better leave right now
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
Feeling weaker and weaker
Somebody better show me out
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now"

I wouldn't know how to say
How good it feels seeing you today
I see you've got your smile back
Like you say you're right on track
But you may never know why
Once bitten twice as shy
If I'm proud perhaps I should explain
I couldn't bear to lose you again

Mmm mmm mmm

"I think I'd better leave right now
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
I'm feeling weaker and weaker
Somebody better show me out
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now"

Yes I will

"I think I'd better leave right now
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
Feeling weaker and weaker
Somebody better show me out
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now"

Artist: Westlife

Mandy
Westlife

I remember all my life
Raining down as cold as ice,
Shadows of a man
A face through a window
Crying in the night
The night goes into

Morning, just another day
Happy people pass my way
Looking in their eyes
I see a memory
I never realised
How happy you made me, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
But I sent you away, oh Mandy
Well you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

I'm standing on the edge of time
I’ve walked away when love was mine
Caught up in a world of uphill climbing
Tears are on my mind
And nothing is rhyming, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
But I sent you away, oh Mandy
Well you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

Yesterday's a dream I face the morning
Crying on a breeze
The pain is calling, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
But I sent you away, oh Mandy
Well you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

You came and you gave without taking
But I sent you away, oh Mandy
You kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you

Oh Mandy won't you listen to what I've got to say
Oh baby don't you let me throw it all it away
Oh Mandy won't you listen to what I've got to say
And I need you today...
Oh Mandy...

CRASHED THE WEDDING

Crashed the Wedding
Busted

I'm so rushed off my feet (oh-oh)
Looking for Gordon Street,
So much I need to say,
I'm sorry that it's on her wedding day ...
'Cos she's so right for me (oh-oh)
Her daddy disagrees,
He's always hated me,
'Cos I never got a j-o-b ...

'Cos she's mine,
And I'm glad I crashed the wedding,
It's better than regretting,
I could have been a loser kid
And ran away and hid
But it's the best thing I ever did.
'Cos it's true love that lasts forever
And now we're back together
As if he never met her
So looking back,
I'm glad I crashed the wedding ...

The neighbours spread the word (damn),
My mum cried when she heard,
I stole my girl away,
From everybody gathered there that day.

And, just in time,
And I'm glad I crashed the wedding,
It's better than regretting,
I could have been a loser kid
And ran away and hid
I said I'd do it and I did.
'Cos it's true love that lasts forever
And now we're back together
As if he never met her
So looking back,
I'm glad I crashed the wedding ...

So please stop being
Mad at me for taking her away, 'cos
Anyway she didn't want to stay.
So please believe me when I say

She's glad I crashed the wedding
It's better than regretting ...
The ring she got was lame
She couldn't take the pain,
She didn't want a silly second name
'Cos true love lasts forever,
And now we're back together
You might as well forget her,
And walk away

She's glad I crashed the wedding ...
It's better than regretting... (it's better than regretting)
The ring she got was lame
She couldn't take the pain,
She didn't want a silly second name (no no no no)
'Cos true love lasts forever (true love lasts)
And now we're back together
You might as well forget her
And walk away
She's glad I crashed the wedding ...

Slow
Kylie Minogue

Knew you'd be here tonight
So I put my best dress on
Boy, I was so right
Our eyes connected
Now nothing's how it used to be
No second guesses
Tracking on this feeling
Pull focus close up: you and me
Nobody's leaving
Got me affected, spun me 180 degrees
So electric

Slow down and dance with me, yeah
Slow
Skip a beat and move with my body, yeah
Slow
Come on and dance with me, yeah
Slow
Skip a beat and move with my body, yeah
Slow

Don't wanna rush it
Let the rhythm pull you in
This will touch it
You know what I'm saying
And I haven't said a thing
Keep the record playing

Slow down and dance with me, yeah
Slow
Skip a beat and move with my body, yeah
Slow
Come on and dance with me, yeah
Slow
Skip a beat and move with my body, yeah
Slow

Ohh

Read my body language
Take it down, down....

Slow down and dance with me, yeah
Slow
Skip a beat and move with my body, yeah
Slow
Come on and dance with me, yeah
Slow
Skip a beat and move with my body, yeah
Slow
Skip a beat and move with my body
Skip a beat and move with my body
Skip a beat and move with my body

HOLE IN THE HEAD

Number 1 on: 19 October 2003

Type of song:

Hole in the head (CD single version 1)
Artist: Sugababes
Label: Island
Three (CD album)
Artist: Sugababes
Label: Universal/Island
Date: 27 October, 2003

This is the third number one song by the Sugababes - a UK group of three women (Keisha and Mutya are from north-west London, and Heidi is from Liverpool). The title of the album from which the song is taken is called "Three". The official Sugababes website is at: http://www.sugababes.com.

The song is about the singer's feelings after a boyfriend has left her. She is feeling angry with him. She won't accept him back when he tries to phone her and sends her flowers - instead of staying at home crying, she goes out and tries to forget him. If you say you miss someone "like a hole in the head" it means that you don't miss him or her at all.

The words of the song are based on an experience of one of the Sugababes (Keisha). When asked about the meaning of the words "Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head? Because I do boy and it's cool boy" Keisha explained, "Everyone sulks when they break up, but it's cool because at the end of the day it's all good. I'm over it now and over you now. That's why."

Rikki Lake is an American chat show hostess.

Hole in the head
Sugababes

Seven hours since you went away
Eleven coffees, Rikki Lake on play
But late at night when I'm feeling blue
I'd sell my ass before I think of you

Seven hours since you closed the door
Started a diet, got a manicure
Erased your number from my telephone
And if you call me I won't be at home

(He said:)
Why don't you cry
For the guy?
Say goodbye
Run away
Why don't you cry
For the guy?
Say goodbye
I said OK, 'cos...

Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head?
Because I do boy
And it's cool boy
And ooh, bet you never thought I'd get out of bed
Because of you boy
Such a fool boy

Eleven hours on a brand new day
I'm getting ready to go out and play
It's late at night, I'm hooked in a groove
I'd kiss my ass before I'm feeling blue

Seven hours, what you calling for?
A bunch of flowers and I slam the door
You're in my face, sorry what's your name?
Takes more than begging to reverse my brain
'cos...

Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head?
Because I do boy
And it's cool boy
And ooh, bet you never thought I'd get out of bed
Because of you boy
Such a fool boy

I'm through with it
Over it
Not having it
Crazy shit
Not feeling this
Can't deal, I quit
No more, No more
I'm through with it
Not having it
This crazy shit
Not feeling it
Can't deal with it
No more, I quit
No more, no more

Breaking off the bum
A brand new day has just begun
Just because you made me go "ooh"
Doesn't mean I'll put up with you
Don't you dare come back
Can't you see I won't take that?
I ain't crying over you
Better fill your head up like I told you

Why don't you cry
For the guy?
Say goodbye
Run away
Why don't you cry
For the guy?
Say goodbye
I said OK, 'cos...

Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head?
Because I do boy
And it's cool boy
And ooh, bet you never thought I'd get out of bed
Because of you boy
Such a fool boy (such a fool)

Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head?
Because I do boy (I do)
And it's cool boy (yeah it's cool)
And ooh, bet you never thought I'd get out of bed
Because of you boy (I do boy)
Such a fool boy (such a fool)

Run away
I said OK, 'cos
Run away
