FEATURES

- A seaside town. The beach is stony (not sandy)
- There are many large, attractive Edwardian houses in the old part of the town
- Can be overcrowded in summer, due to the arrival of tourists and language school students taking short summer courses
- A pier (an entertainment centre which extends over the sea, offering amusement arcades, fairground rides and fast food)
- A bandstand in the park
- A promenade with many attractive flowerbeds
- The population contains a larger than average number of old people, and is considered relatively conservative

ENVIRONMENT

Eastbourne is safer than Brighton; a kinder/more friendly attitude to international students
Operation Columbus is a campaign by Sussex Police which tries to protect visiting students. See: http://www.sussex.police.uk/youth/columbus.
In 2001/02 there were 13.2 offences of violence against people per 1,000 people, higher than the English average of 10.8.
In 2000, Eastbourne was ranked the 136th most deprived out of the 354 districts in England.
